The 95th Academy Awards concluded with seven wins for the hot favourite Everything Everywhere All at Once, and a hotly touted victory in the Best Original Song category for India’s own RRR. India bagged a second Oscar win in the Best Documentary Short category, with the film The Elephant Whisperers. Director Shaunak Sen’s All that Breathes was also nominated in the Best Documentary Feature category, but lost to Navalny.
Among other big winners, the anti-war drama All Quiet on the Western Front won four awards, most in the below-the-line categories, while The Whale won two awards. In a mild upset, Austin Butler lost the Best Actor trophy to Brendan Fraser, while big favourite Angela Bassett lost the Best Supporting Actress Oscar to Jamie Lee Curtis.
Here are five major winners at this year’s Oscars, and where to watch them:
Everything Everywhere All at Once – SonyLIV
Directed by the Daniels, the genre-hopping film stars Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu and Jamie Lee Curtis. EEAAO won seven Oscars, the most of any film this year, and has long been a frontrunner. It is also a box office success, having grossed more than $100 million worldwide.
All Quiet on the Western Front – Netflix
The Netflix original film, directed by Edward Berger, won the Oscars for cinematography, score, production design, and Best International Feature. The film was also nominated for Best Picture.
The Elephant Whisperers – Netflix
The short documentary about a couple who take care of an orphaned elephant, directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet Monga, is among the many films about humans bonding with animals that drew acclaim last year. Others include Best International Feature nominee EO, the documentary Wildcat, and also The Banshees of Inisherin, whose donkey cast member made an appearance at the Oscars.
RRR – Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar and ZEE5
Despite being a big box office hit, SS Rajamouli’s RRR owes a great debt to streaming platforms. It became a word-of-mouth hit in the US only after it debuted on Netflix, albeit in the dubbed Hindi version. The original Telugu version is available on ZEE5, and the Tamil dubbed version is available on Disney+ Hotstar.
The Banshees of Inisherin – Disney+ Hotstar
The dark comedy starring nominated actors Colin Farrell, Kerry Condon, Barry Keoghan and Brendan Gleeson is available to watch on Disney+ Hotstar. An allegorical tale about war presented through the lens of a disintegrating friendship, the film walked away with zero wins, despite being tied for second with All Quiet on the Western Front for most nominations this year (9), behind only EEAAO.
